The city announced on Friday yet another structural failure at the Bob Korn Memorial Swimming Pool, further pushing back its reopening.
The Cordova Parks and Recreation Department said officials recently identified another “significant” issue with the pool’s structure while filling it with water.
“We have identified the underlying issue and are taking steps to evaluate the extent of the damage,” the department said. “Further updates will be shared as more information becomes available.”
Officials did not immediately specify what the structural failure is.
Parks and Rec originally closed the pool back in May 2025 due to ongoing valve gasket leaks. Since then, the department has worked to diagnose the issues and contract out repair labor.
In the eight months since the pool’s closure, community members have eagerly awaited its reopening. Especially during Cordova’s winter months, the pool provides much-needed indoor recreation opportunities to keep the community physically and mentally healthy.
“The Bob Korn Memorial Swimming Pool holds a special place in our community, serving as an important space for recreation, swim instruction, and training,” the Parks and Recreation announcement said. “We understand how much residents value this facility and the role it plays in our quality of life.”
The department did not give a new tentative timeline for the pool’s reopening.
