The Bob Korn Memorial Swimming Pool is closed again just a month after its grand reopening.
City officials announced this week they’d have to temporarily close the facility due to “another issue with our pool boiler.”
“Our maintenance team and Caliber Mechanical are working hard to get things back up and running as quickly as possible,” Parks and Recreation staff posted online. “We know how disappointing this is, and we share that disappointment. Please know that we are doing everything we can to get everyone back in the water as soon as possible.”
The reopening in mid September came 16 months after officials stopped pool service because of multiple structural failures: a faulty gasket, a clogged return line, and a hole in the main plumbing that triggered a foundation washout.
However, one option forward could be eventually incorporating a new pool into plans for much-needed capital improvements at the Cordova Jr./Sr. High School building, according to new schools Superintendent Kim Hanisch.
During this week’s school board meeting, Hanisch threw out the idea while discussing a state grant the district hopes to apply for next year, although she did say applying for funding for both a pool and building renovations “could look sort of like we’re going for a big grab.”
“Is our application going to be stronger because of that or not so strong?” she said.
Hanisch said she had plans to to meet with Cordova City Manager Sam Greenwood and Parks and Recreation Director Samantha Hagerthy-Schneider to discuss collaborative design ideas in the coming weeks.
The deadline for the district’s capital improvement state grant is September 2027.
Meanwhile, it is unclear how serious the pool’s boiler issue is, or how long it’ll take to fix.
