The city of Cordova announced on Friday that it will close the Bob Korn Memorial Swimming Pool indefinitely starting on May 10, citing ongoing water leaks.
“Please be assured that city staff are working diligently to resolve the matter as quickly as possible in order to safely resume operations,” the city’s announcement said. “At this time, there is no confirmed date for reopening.”
The closure comes as the summer pre-season is underway, and less than year after the city announced it would be re-opening the pool after replacing its interior liner. The pool’s PVC liner — last installed in 2012 — had a 10-year warranty that expired in 2022. A 2023 facility assessment of the structural and mechanical integrity of the 50-year-old pool the year of the warranty’s expiration indicated that the structure was due for a new liner.
Samantha Hagerthy-Schneider, the director of Cordova’s Parks and Recreation Department, told The Cordova Times that all pool staff have been notified of the maintenance and reassigned to other areas of the department.
“This will allow continued employment and support other community programs during the maintenance period,” Hagerthy-Schneider said.
She also confirmed the pool’s policy to not give season pass refunds due to maintenance-related closures.
“We appreciate the community’s understanding and patience as we work to complete these essential repairs,” Hagerthy-Schneider said. “We will keep everyone updated as work progresses.”
