Cordovans are preparing for the annual Old Time 4th of July celebration next weekend.
Put on by the Cordova Chamber of Commerce, the celebration on July 4 will include food, square dancing, kids games, and a patriotic tribute at Hollis Henrichs Park – otherwise known as the grassy field near the hospital.
The Chamber of Commerce was unsure if it would be able to organize the Independence Day celebration, after the city withdrew all $70,000 of municipal funding for the entity during the 2025 budget cycle.
However, officials said a “core group” of community partners, including the Native Village of Eyak, Cordova Parks and Recreation Department, and Chugach Alaska Corporation, are providing both in-kind and financial support for the celebration.
“We are determined to bring the community together this year, and we’re incredibly grateful to the partners who made that possible,” Cathy Renfeldt, Executive Director of the Cordova Chamber of Commerce, said. “This event has always belonged to the community. We hope this year’s celebration not only brings people together, but also helps us build a path forward so future generations can continue to enjoy it.”
The Old Time 4th of July celebration will begin at noon with an opening ceremony consisting of the presenting of the colors and the national anthem.
At 12:30 p.m. the food and activity booths will open, and live bluegrass music and square dancing will begin. Kids’ games will begin at 1:30 p.m.
