Cordova Department of Parks and Recreation staff located what they believe is the major source of the Bob Korn Memorial Pool’s leak last week, and is preparing for repairs.
“The fix will require cutting into the pool and removing concrete to replace plumbing,” the city said. “There’s no timeline yet, but we’ll share updates as we have them.”
The city in May announced staff would have to close the pool indefinitely because of a leak issue, and then in July diagnosed it as a valve gasket failure. But upon further investigation, the problem seemed to be more than just a failed gasket.
The latest Sept. 5 update comes as the summer season wraps up and Cordovans still don’t have access to their indoor pool. Recently, cries for the pool’s re-opening have been loud – including at recent city meetings.
At the City Council’s Sept. 3 meeting, council members reiterated that they want to see the pool re-open as much as the community does.
“While we love meetings, please don’t send any more Iceworms with big eyes to tell us to prioritize the pool,” Council Member Wendy Ranney said during the meeting. “It’s a priority, it’s a priority, honest to God.”
