Girls and boys basketball teams from Glennallen, Tok, Effie Kokrine, and Nenana will arrive in Cordova for the 2A Interior Conference playoffs here from March 6-8.
The winners and runners-up of three days of double elimination play will advance to the 2A State tournament in Anchorage from March 13-15.
The location of the conference playoffs rotates through the member schools, so this a very special event to host – occurring only once every five years.
Between players, cheerleaders, coaching staff, plus visiting and hometown fans, the Cordova High School (CHS) court will be packed.
The Cordova teams last played at home on Jan. 18, in the final round of the Cordova Tipoff, so it has been about seven weeks since they have played on their home court.
The Wolverine boys and girls have played a challenging schedule of tournaments at Valdez, Anchorage, and Metlakatla. The boys also played Alaska 4A squads, plus a team from Seattle at the Juneau Capital City Classic.
Both teams also just completed a swing through the Interior on Feb. 28-March 1, where the Cordova boys beat Effie Kokrine and took a pair from Nenana. The Cordova girls also defeated Effie Kokrine but lost both games to Nenana.
Berths in Thursday’s first round of action of the Conference Playoffs will be seeded based on win-loss records against conference foes. Cordova’s girls are seeded third; the Cordova boys are ranked first.
In the opening round on March 6 there are six games, starting at noon with the Tok girls versus Effie Kokrine. The Cordova girls play Nenana at 3 p.m.
At 7:45 p.m. the Cordova boys play the last game of the first round, facing the winner of a 1:30 p.m. matchup between Nenana and Glennallen.
More games will be played Friday and Saturday in the double elimination format. That includes the championship games.
The girls’ title game will be played at 5:30 p.m. on March 7, and the boys’ game will follow at 7 p.m.
On March 8, there will be only two games: The girls game for second place and state qualification at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7 p.m. for the same.
