The Cordova boys finished a two-game road trip to Tok and Glennallen in dramatic fashion.
Trailing the Panthers 36-35 with 17.7 seconds left, Wolverine Sean Ybanez hit a floater off an inbound play as the horn sounded to give Cordova the win, 37-36.
A game that started with Cordova scoring zero points in the first quarter finished with CHS pouring in 24 points in the last quarter. Spearheading the rally was Eli Totemoff with three 3-pointers in that stanza, plus Blake Bailey with 8 points.
Totemoff finished the game with 14 points, Bailey had 13.
Amazingly, Cordova also won the previous day’s matchup with Tok by one point, 38-37. This time it was Blake Bailey sealing the win with a pair of clutch free throws.
“I can’t ever remember winning two such close games by one point back-to-back,” said CHS Coach Jake Borst.
Next it’s Homecoming and Senior Night this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28, with Nenana here to face CHS in what should be quite a series. Then it’s regionals at Effie Kokrine in Fairbanks on March 5-7.
Given the way these conference teams have matched up this year, it should be a “doozey.”
