Cordova’s lady hoopers took the consolation game at the 2A State Basketball Tournament in Anchorage earlier this month, while the boys fell out of the tournament in two games.
Metlakatla sent the Wolverines to the loser’s bracket after beating Cordova 22-34 during the first round of play on March 12 at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage. But the girls bounced back to win their second game against Chevak, 62-33, on March 13, before winning the consolation game against Susitna Valley, 32-27, on March 14.
The boys fell out of the tournament in two consecutive games – first after their loss against top-seeded Ninilchik, 25-52, on March 12, then after their loss against Susitna Valley, 53-31, on March 13.
Two Kenai Peninsula teams, the Seward Seahawk girls and the Ninilchik Wolverine boys, walked away with state championship prizes.
