The Cordova Community Foundation (CCF) earlier this month announced more than $20,000 in awards to nine local organizations for projects that promote community wellbeing.
Recipients included:
- The 2×2 Cancer Walk, which provides financial assistance to Cordova residents facing cancer;
- Copper River Marketing Association’s Copper River Flats navigational markers;
- Covered Spaces Project’s planning for the Breakwater Trail recreation space;
- Prince William Sound Science Center’s inflatable planetarium;
- Salvation Army’s expanded and improved food pantry;
- KCHU Public Radio for broadcast resilience upgrades;
- Lego League at Mt. Eccles Elementary School;
- Mt. Eyak Ski Area for additional lighting and bunny hill expansion; and
- the Cordova Family Resource Center for youth scholarships and an anti-bullying initiative.
CCF says the grants highlight how organizations and volunteers “work to keep Cordova resilient, connected, and thriving.” Since its beginning in 2019, the foundation has awarded more than $80,000 in grants for local Cordova organizations.
“Grant funding allowed me to leave registration wide open this year to all who wished to participate,” said Kristie Beckett, who runs the Mt. Eccles Lego League program. She said 51 kids joined this year, including more than half of the first-grade class.
CCF has also pledged a $20,000 matching grant to the Cordova Department of Parks and Recreation for the Skaters Cabin rebuild.
“Skaters Cabin is more than a building. It is a gathering place, a memory-maker, and a symbol of who we are as a community,” said Parks and Recreation Director Samantha Hagerthy-Schneider. “I am humbled but not surprised by Cordova’s ability to come together for a cause that truly matters. Through these grants, the Cordova Community Foundation continues its mission of supporting projects that enhance quality of life, strengthen community connections, and create opportunities for Cordova residents.”
