Cordovans will have the opportunity to learn more about the Second Street Reconstruction project later this month.

City and state Department of Transportation (DOT) officials will be giving an update on the proposed project at the Cordova Center on Sept. 30. Part of the discussion will also include a presentation of the latest concept drawings for sidewalk and parking improvements, and a discussion on how people will access their homes and businesses during construction.

The city of Cordova submitted a request to re-do Second Street from West Davis Avenue to the Copper River Highway years ago – the purpose being to improve pedestrian safety and comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.

Those upgrades include repaving the street, replacing the sidewalks, improving drainage, installing more street lights, improving signage, and more.

According to the DOT, the timeline of the project was originally to begin with an environmental assessment impact all the way back in 2021. Construction was supposed to take place from quarter two to quarter four of this year.

The public is also invited to make public comments about the project before Oct. 14. Submit comments to Russel Johnson, P.E., Engineering Manager, at: Department of Transportation & Public Facilities; 2301 Peger Road, Fairbanks, Alaska, 99709-5316. Johnson can also be reached by telephone at (907) 451-5059; by text at 771 or 1-800-770-8973; or via email at [email protected].
