More than a year after Cordova’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) closed due to lack of staff, it re-opened today.

“We’re pleased to offer this valuable service once again to our community,” Cordova City Manager Samantha Greenwood said.

The local DMV is open by appointment only. Hours are:

  • Mondays from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. and 2:30-4 p.m.
  • Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. and 2:30-4 p.m.
  • Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. and 2:30-5 p.m.

The DMV closed in the summer of 2024 when the department was having technical issues, and it stayed closed after its lone employee left shortly thereafter.

This city even enlisted the state Department of Motor Vehicles to make a mobile visit to Cordova for REAL ID and driver’s test appointments this past July.

“Had we not hired someone, we would have requested that the state bring in another mobile DMV unit,” Greenwood said.

The city’s new DMV clerk, Spencer Johnson, had to undergo various trainings before being credentialed to run the department, according to Greenwood.

“Spencer Johnson, our new DMV Clerk, brings strong qualifications and experience, and will be a great asset to the city staff,” she said.

Johnson will be able to provide additional services as he undergoes more training. Currently, the Cordova DMV only offers services for state ID cards, driver’s permits, standard driver’s licenses, and REAL IDs.
