The City of Cordova is calling on residents to use a new statewide reporting system to log safety concerns on the road.
The portal — a new feature of the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT) website — allows users to report potholes, poor signage, and an array of general safety hazards on local roads maintained by the state.
In its announcement, the city said the feature is meant to enable officials “to prioritize repairs and allocate resources effectively.”
“When community members report concerns, they provide valuable insights that might otherwise go unnoticed,” the announcement says. “This feedback loop is crucial for maintaining the quality and safety of our state roads, making it easier for transportation officials to take prompt action.”
On the DOT portal, users are able to pinpoint an exact spot where they have a road safety concern. The online form also asks users to choose a specific road type and mark how you use the road. It then prompts users to choose among a list of concerns — which include issues with sidewalks, high traffic volume, plowing, visibility, and more.
In Cordova, residents can report issues on the following roadways, which are maintained by the state and outside of city jurisdiction: The Copper River Highway, Whitshed Road, Lake Avenue, Power Creek Road, and the New England Cannery Road (also known as Orca Road). Visit the portal to make a safety report at the state DOT website.
“Your input is invaluable in helping maintain the quality and safety of our state roads,” the city announcement states.
