High wind gusts in Cordova on Monday shaved off residential siding and roofing in town, according to reports from city residents.
The storm reached its peak close to 5 p.m. on Jan. 6 – with winds reaching an intense 82 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service. While smaller gusts were clocked through the weekend, the wind really started picking up around 10 a.m. that day – eclipsing 40 miles per hour.
Gusts have since died down – replaced by rain showers – but residents are reporting damage to their properties, as well as lost items.
On the Cordova Online Bulletin Board Facebook group, one user said their house sustained major roof damage, and that rain has been leaking into the attic and insulation. Another person went out to the harbor and recovered blown away kayaks. Someone even found what appears to be an old family photo in their yard, and took to Facebook to find the picture’s owner.
Cassandra Squibb, a spokesperson for Copper River Seafoods, told The Cordova Times a few buildings on the property were damaged. She confirmed there were no injuries.
“We have experienced something like this before. In fact, two years ago, very close to the same date in early-January 2023, there was a similar storm that impacted our property,” Squibb said. “We are still assessing the full impact.”
