The federal government has chosen Prince William Sound for a workshop in Whittier aimed at ways the region can develop outdoor recreation to strengthen its downtowns, support local business, and improve residents’ quality of life.
Federal and regional entities are partnering with the municipalities of Cordova, Chenega, Tatilek, Valdez, and Whittier through the Environmental Protection Agency’s Recreation Economy for Rural Communities (RERC) Program.
Residents, leaders, and businesses are invited to the in-person workshop from Sept. 15-16 at Whittier’s Public Safety Building to converse and share ideas.
“(The) workshop will help bring together a wide range of voices and perspectives to create a community-driven action plan laying out specific steps that our PWS communities and the region as a whole can take to achieve our outdoor recreation goals,” the Prince William Sound Economic Development District (PWSEDD) said in a statement.
The workshop in Whittier will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Sept. 15, and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 16.
“Coming out of the workshop with an action plan in hand will help partners create some ‘shovel ready’ (though not necessarily construction-related), actionable projects that we can tee up for funding applications,” PWSEDD said. “All are welcome – no planning experience required. The best ideas come from the people who live here.”
