With 14 years already in the books, new city manager Samantha Greenwood has some history working for the City of Cordova. In late April, a three-year contract was established between the City of Cordova and Greenwood in her new role, despite already leading as interim in the position.
Greenwood came to Cordova from Sitka, after graduating from Sheldon Jackson College. Her first connection to Cordova was working for the forest service as a fisheries and GIS technician doing fieldwork.
In alignment with those who held the city manager position previous, Greenwood hopes to continue to improve infrastructure and seek grants. The Cordova harbor is the biggest project currently in place. The old harbor simply was not safe, said Greenwood. Next on the horizon, the wastewater plant will need pipe upgrades to maintain and sustain the water sewer system, she said.
City employees are excited for Greenwood to lead the way on these projects.
“Sam is great. She cares about Cordova, public funds, the workforce, and how things are spent. She is thorough, asks questions and is approachable. She creates a good work environment,” said city employee Barbara Webber.
Transitioning from being the public works director, Greenwood is fresh faced in navigating the concerns of the community. Housing is currently a top concern among residents.
The city is continually working in partnership with Prince William Sound Economic Development District (PWSEDD). PWSEDD fosters economic growth and responsible development in the Prince William Sound region through partnerships with federal, state, and local government. Relationships with other cities like Wrangell and Whittier have helped guide Cordova as well.
Greenwood encourages community members to be involved and stay informed on upcoming projects. City council meetings are archived on YouTube, the city webpage can be accessed at cityofcordova.net, and Cordovans can sign up to receive email updates. Greenwood also said they are working on their online presence via social media, like Facebook and Instagram, to better build communications with the community.
Giving back to the community and making positive changes are what Greenwood hopes to attain. When asked what makes Cordova unique, Greenwood said “the people of the community are amazing.”
Outside of work, Greenwood and her husband John enjoy being out in nature with their dogs, boating, and fishing. Like many Cordovans, the new city manager also enjoys knitting and sewing during her time away from the office.
