Salmon Runs, Small Fry Activities, Women on Target

33rd Annual Alaska Salmon Runs

Online registration for this year’s Alaska Salmon Runs closed 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 10. After that, runners may register at the Bidarki Rec Center in Cordova until noon on Friday, July 12. For all events other than the King Salmon Marathon, runners may register on race day, starting at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 13 at race headquarters in the Cordova Community Medical Center parking lot on Chase Avenue. Taste of Cordova

Enter a dish of your own or stop by to sample Taste of Cordova’s wild food cook-off at the Salmon Jam Festival Grounds at Mt. Eyak Ski Area at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 13. Submit a dish and receive a discount at the gate and be first in line to try all the entries when the Taste of Cordova opens to the public. Submissions need to be dropped off at the Taste of Cordova table no later than 6 p.m. for judging. For more information, including the prize categories, visit salmonjam.org/taste-of-cordova.

Small Fry Activities

Stop by the base of Mt. Eyak Ski Area from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 13 for free educational activities for the young and young at heart. Highlights include fish printing, casting practice, fillet demonstration, face painting, games and other activities. For more information, visit salmonjam.org/small-fry.

Women on Target

The Cordova Trap & Gun Club is hosting an all-women shotgun safety and fundamentals class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 14 at Cordova’s public shooting range on Sheridan Glacier Road. There will be two all-day class dates to choose from with only 10 spaces available for each day. Celebrating Rocky Stone

A Celebration of Life of Rocky Stone will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 21 at the Pioneer Igloo Hall Number 19. Join Rocky’s Cordova family and friends for a Memorial Talking Circle led by Bill Hall followed by hors d’oeuvrers, desserts, and fond memories.

Nuuciq Spirit Camp

Children and elders of the Chugach people will gather at Nuchek on Hinchinbrooke Island, southwest of Cordova, to learn about their history and culture. Free Business Classes

Ilanka Cultural Center is offering free summer business classes in Basic Bookkeeping, LLC’s in Alaska, Starting a Business, Creating Financial Projections and Business Insurance for Small Businesses. Classes are taken online, from your own computer and at your own pace. Native Village of Eyak will pay for class fees and the program is open to the public. Bidarki Adult Volleyball

Adults 18 and older are welcome to play open league volleyball 6-8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Bidarki Rec Center. For information on drop-in and membership rates, contact the Bidarki at 907-424-7282 or stop by the facility at 103 Council Ave., Cordova.

Tot Time

The Bidarki Rec Center opens the upstairs gym for little ones 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Toys, mats and other items are provided so tots and their caregivers can enjoy some free, inside play-time, rain or shine. There is no fee to attend.

Bidarki Adult Basketball

Summer Food Service Program

Free healthy meals for kids 18 and younger are provided weekdays through August 9 at the following times and locations: Mt. Eccles Elementary School and Children’s Pallas provide breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Bidarki Rec Center and the Cordova Family Resource Center provide lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A hot meal option is available at Mt. Eccles Elementary School only and all other locations offer cold meals. All meals must be consumed on site.

Al-Anon in Cordova

Al-Anon for friends and family of alcoholics meets 7 p.m. Mondays at the Wellness Center (old DMV office). For more information, contact Katie at 907-965-5909.


TUESDAYS

Gospel sing-along

Join members of St. George’s Episcopal Church on Tuesdays from 4-5 p.m. at the Cordova Community Medical Center for a gospel sing-along, started in honor of Frances Mallory, and led by Christina Vican and Rev. Belle Mickelson. Anyone who wants to sing or play gospel songs is welcome to join to bring smiles to the long-term residents and hospital staff. For more information contact Belle at 907-424-5143.

Men’s Bible study

A men’s Bible study, led by Matt Rush, will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Red Dragon.

Knit & Lit Book Club

Bring your knitting and join the Knit & Lit Book Club at 7 p.m. at the fireplacein the Cordova Public Library, the last Tuesday of every month.


WEDNESDAYS

Hurts, Habits, or Hang-ups

A Christian program to help overcome issues with substance use, abuse, divorce, fear, anxiety, food, gambling, and other hurts, habits, and hang-ups is every Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene’s Christian Education Building on Adams Avenue.
