The Cordova Times is seeking another skilled local freelance reporter to focus on news coverage coming out of Cordova and the surrounding Prince William Sound area.

The weekly newspaper, established in 1914, is an Alaska Press Club award-winning publication that has been undergoing an editorial and managerial reboot since 2022. Since new ownership took over more than two years ago, we’ve expanded our local and statewide news coverage, re-designed our website and social media platforms, and added new voices to the newspaper. In 2023 we won three Alaska Press Club awards for government/politics and health reporting.

An ideal candidate for the freelance reporter position will have strong writing and communication skills, good news judgement, and will be able to make and maintain connections in Cordova, even though our newsroom is remote. While we do publish arts and culture pieces, the freelance reporter will focus on hard local news — including on the local government, schools and fisheries beats. Pay ranges from $150-$185 per story, and an additional $15 per photo used in print.

A Cordova resident will receive priority, and any prior journalism and/or photography experience is an added bonus.

To apply for the position please email a resume, two writing samples, and a photography portfolio if you have it to [email protected].
