The Bob Korn Memorial Pool in Cordova is slated to re-open for public use this fall, according to city officials, after being closed since early August for a liner replacement.

Duncan Chisholm, the director of the Cordova Department of Parks and Recreation, told The Cordova Times that the department closed the pool on Aug. 5 to prepare for the Aug. 19 reconstruction start date — but recognized that it cut into the summer season.

“We understand the timing of the project is not ideal for all parties who use the pool but it is based on contractor availability,” he said.

The pool’s PVC liner — last installed in 2012 — had a 10-year warranty that expired in 2022, according to Chisholm. A facility assessment of the structural and mechanical integrity of the 50-year-old pool the year of the warranty’s expiration indicated that the structure was due for a new liner.

“The liner showed signs of wear and tear and had effectively come to the end of its operational life and needed to be replaced,” he said.

Chisholm added that “a number of deficiencies and improvements were identified in the report.”

In late 2023, the city released a request for proposal (RFP) for the pool liner’s replacement and landed on a $230,000 deal with RenoSys — a commercial pool construction and renovation company based out of Indianapolis, Indiana. The team at RenoSys is working seven days per week on the project, Chisholm said, “to complete the job as efficiently as possible.”

“They have removed the existing liner and (are) currently doing repairs to the pool gutters and removing residue off the aluminum shell in order to prepare the surface to install the new liner,” he said. “The work is progressing as fast as possible and we appreciate the community’s patience.”

Chisholm said that if all goes according to plan, Cordovans will be able to swim again in early October.
