Charlie Cabanillla, 82, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, resilience, and devotion to family.
Born on Aug. 14, 1943, in Ilocos Sur, Philippines to Roman and Terry Cabanilla, he immigrated to the United States (Cordova, Alaska) at the age of 12, where he would go on to build a life defined by perseverance and grit. He built a career as a commercial fisherman in Bristol Bay, Alaska, a path that reflected both his toughness and his commitment to providing for those he loved.
Charlie was a proud veteran of the US Army, serving our country during the Vietnam conflict.
Growing up surrounded by the beautiful landscape of Alaska’s mountains, glaciers, and wildlife, Charlie learned to fish, hunt and appreciate nature and the bounties it provided, an appreciation that he proudly shared with his sons.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara (Campbell) Cabanilla, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage. Together, they built a family grounded in loyalty, discipline, and care for one another.
Charlie is survived by his sisters, Gloria, Bella, and Joyce, as well as his four children, Kirk, Kris (Valerie), Jill (Jarrett), and Jena (Charlie), and seven grandchildren: Logan, Mallory, Christian, Noah, Sierra, Mya, and Jackson.
He was a man who showed up – consistently and without hesitation – for friends and family alike. If someone needed help, he was there. He gave his time and energy freely, often putting others before himself. He believed discipline and effort were the foundation of a good life and instilled the value of hard work, education, and self respect in his children.
Charlie lived a full life and will be remembered for his strength, his generosity, and the lasting impact he had on those who knew him.
