Seven-day-a-week state ferry service aboard the MV Lituya is coming to the Metlakatla Indian Community this spring.
The Alaska Marine Highway System announced on March 17 that in late March or early April the Lituya will begin operating every day of the week between Annette Bay and Ketchikan.
Metlakatla community leaders have for years advocated for expanded ferry service for residents who rely on the ferry as their primary transportation connection to Ketchikan.
“Seven-day service will make a real difference for our community; to residents making medical trips, students traveling to tournaments and educational events, to families managing everyday needs like shopping and employment,” said Metlakatla Mayor Albert Smith. “Having consistent ferry service between Annette Bay and Ketchikan means people won’t have to plan their lives around gaps in the schedule.”
