A fishing vessel drill instructor course will be offered in Valdez on March 29 by the Alaska Marine Safety Education Association (AMSEA).

The class will cover: cold-water survival skills, EPIRHs, signal flares and mayday calls, man overboard recovery, firefighting, flooding and damage control, dewatering pumpkin immersion suits, PFDs, helicopter rescue, life rafts, abandon ship procedures, and emergency drills.

AMSEA’s Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor workshops meet the U.S. Coast Guard training requirements for drill conductors on commercial fishing vessels.

AMSEA encourages participating, saying this is an excellent opportunity for commercial fishermen and other mariners to get hands-on training with marine safety equipment and learn best practices for surviving emergencies at sea.

The class is free for commercial fishermen and $250 for all others. Interested mariners may register online at www.amsea.org or call 907-747-3387. The class is from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
