Playing their last home games of the season, the CHS Wolverines bounced back from a nail-biting loss to Nenana on Feb. 27, to race to a lopsided 63-45 win the next evening.
In Friday’s physical matchup between conference rivals, Nenana made a pair of free throws with 7 seconds left in the contest to push past Cordova, 55-53.
Cordova led 10-8 after the first quarter; the Lynx took a 25-22 advantage at half time and pulled ahead 41-35 at the end of the third period. CHS tied it 53-53 before the Lynx cashed in on the free throws.
Cordova played much of the game without high-scoring playmaker Blake Bailey, who departed early in the first quarter with an injury. Eli Totemoff had 17 points, Steven Pallas stepped up with 14 points, Danilo So added 10, Dexter Gasmen had 5, Sean Ybanez scored 4, Gunnar Davis put in 3 points.
On Saturday the Wolverines were on fire. Both squads played up-tempo basketball, plus end-line to end-line full court pressure. The score was tied 23-23 at the half.
Cordova held the Lynx scoreless for the first six minutes of the third quarter while pouring in 24 to points take a commanding 30-point lead.
Totemoff led CHS with 20 points on Saturday, Pallas added 15, So had 13, Bailey put in 6, Ybanez scored 4, and Davis had 2.
The Wolverines next head to Effie Kokrine for regionals in Fairbanks on March 6-7.
