A list of announced, but not necessarily officially registered, candidates running for Alaska governor just keeps growing.
The latest to announce as of Feb. 17 was independent Meda DeWitt – a traditional healer and community organizer of Tlingit heritage – who said her campaign will focus on self-determination, accountable government, resilient communities and responsible stewardship of land, water and natural systems.
Soldotna Republican Hank Kroll, author of more than a dozen books, was the only one to date to file the paperwork required by all candidates – but that’s not unusual, said Stephen Kirch, public relations manager for the state Division of Elections.
Others who have publicly announced their intention to run include Kasilof independent Jessica Faircloth, Anchorage Democrats Tom Begich and Matt Claman, and 11 Republicans: Click Bishop, Fairbanks; David Bronson, Anchorage; Adam Crum, Wasilla; Nancy Dahllstrom, Juneau; Mat-Su Borough Mayor Edna DeVries; Shelly Hughes, Palmer; James Parkin, Angoon; Bernadette Wilson, Anchorage; and Alaska Medical Board member Matt Heillala and Alaska Attorney General Treg Taylor.
The filing deadline for the gubernatorial race is June 1. The Primary Election is on Aug. 18, and Election Day is on Nov. 3.
