With Gov. Mike Dunleavy term limited and ineligible to run for a third consecutive term, 11 Republicans and three Democrats are vying for a top spot in the Aug. 18 primary election.
The nonpartisan blanket primary will determine the four highest-placing candidates to advance to a ranked-choice general election on Nov. 3.
The Democrats include former Alaska Senate minority leader Tom Begich, the uncle of U.S. Rep. Nick Begich, R-Alaska; State Sen. Matt Claman, D-Anchorage; and former state Sen. Jonathan Kriss-Tomkins, D-Sitka.
Kriss-Tomkins, a five-term state legislator and the latest to declare, said his campaign raised more than $600,000 in the first 24 hours of his candidacy.
Republicans vying for a spot on the general election ballot are former state Sen. Click Bishop; former Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson; former Alaska Revenue Commissioner Adam Crum; current Alaska Lt. Gov, Nancy Dahlstrom; Matanuska-Susitna Mayor Edna DeVries; state Alaska State Medical Board member Matt Heilala; former Alaska Senate majority leader Shelley Hughes; Alaska Atty. Gen. Treg Taylor; and Bernadette Wilson, owner of the Anchorage garbage firm Denali Disposal.
