The Cordova School District Board of Education is slated to choose finalists this weekend to take over as the new superintendent of schools.
The board has a special meeting scheduled on Jan. 3 to review superintendent applications and select three final candidates to move to the last stage of the hiring process. While members of the public are allowed to make comments at the beginning of the meeting, board members will move into private executive session to choose the finalists.
The board has been looking for a new candidate to lead the Cordova School District since July, when schools Superintendent Alex Russin announced the 2025-2026 school year would be his last.
“Cordova was a wonderful landing spot for my family and me, at that time, after having left a 14-year journey in western Alaska,” Russin said in his retirement announcement. “Cordova memories of student interactions, chaperoning school trips, staff debates, community gatherings, and yes, even a pandemic, will surely stay with me as I explore what is described as the ‘next chapter’ in life.”
Russin will cap 11 years at the Cordova School District by the time he leaves next spring.
Applications for the Cordova schools superintendent position were due to the Association of Alaska School Boards on Dec. 19.
The board’s Jan. 3 meeting will begin at 10 a.m. at the district conference room. The three finalists chosen are scheduled to meet the Cordova community in person from Jan. 18-20.
