A Massachusetts man died earlier this month in a hunting accident in Cordova.

The Alaska State Troopers responded to an emergency call around 10:45 a.m. on Oct. 1, with a report that 67-year-old John DeLuca and a companion had fallen from Queen’s Chair in Cordova while goat hunting.

The U.S. Coast Guard responded with a helicopter and flew DeLuca to Cordova for medical attention, where he was pronounced dead.

According to various reports, DeLuca was hunting with his son in Cordova at the time of his accident. His son also reportedly fell from the cliff after trying to break his father’s fall, but survived.

DeLuca worked at a county sheriff’s office in Massachusetts for 39 years, according to his obituary.

His family had raised nearly $160,000 for DeLuca’s son’s recovery and his wife’s financial transition, as of Monday.
