Cordova is not under tsunami threat after a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck 55 miles south of Sand Point on Wednesday afternoon.

The National Tsunami Warning Center originally issued a tsunami warning for coastal Alaskan communities after the tremor hit around 12:30 p.m. on July 16, but then canceled it just over two hours later. Sand Point is town on a small island on the Aleutian chain.

According to NOAA’s Tsunami Warning Center, there is currently no warning, advisory, watch, or threat as a result of the quake.

“We are closely monitoring official updates from the U.S. Tsunami Warning Centers and will promptly inform the public if conditions change,” the city of Cordova said in a public notice Wednesday afternoon. “Stay safe and informed.”
