The state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will be in Cordova next week for the city’s long-anticipated mobile visit.

Next Tuesday through Thursday, the DMV will be available at the Cordova Center for pre-scheduled REAL ID/driver’s license, road test, learner’s permit, and out-of-state license transfer appointments.

The city has had to solicit help from the state, since Cordova’s DMV closed last summer when the department was having issues with its tech and web systems. After officials resolved the tech issues the lone DMV employee resigned, leaving the department shuttered indefinitely.

The city announced it had hired a DMV employee to run the office last winter – but that person withdrew their application. The city is still looking for a part-time DMV customer service clerk, according to its job postings page. The position is a three-days-per-week role with retirement, time off, and health care benefits. The salary range is listed as $21.16 – $24.76 per hour.

For off-the-road-system communities like Cordova, access to a DMV can be critical. While many DMV services can be completed online, there are a few services only accessible via in-person visits.

One of those services is for people to obtain a REAL ID, which is a federally compliant, more secure form of identification required for domestic air travel as of May 7. (However, people can also fly within the United States with a valid passport.)

The other major service Cordovans need to complete in person are driver’s tests. The city encourages those who didn’t pre-register for a road test to come to the Cordova Center on June 24 to sign up.

After the mobile visit registration deadline on April 25, more than 200 Cordovans had scheduled DMV appointments.

The Cordova Police Department on Thursday also warned residents of a DMV text scam going around – which falsely claims people have outstanding traffic tickets. The police are advising people who receive the text to delete it and mark it as spam.

The mobile DMV will operate out of the Cordova Center’s Community Rooms A and B from June 24 through June 26. Hours of operation are from 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., and 12 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. each day.

Besides road tests, all other services are provided on a first come first served basis. All DMV services require original documentation – potentially including but not limited to a birth certificate, social security card, and proof of address – even if you’re pre-registered.
