Three Cordova High senior boys from this year’s basketball squad that finished second in the state 2A basketball tournament were invited to the Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches Senior All Star games in Anchorage on April 11- 12.
Cordova’s John Itliong, Chiko Jacob, and Noah Peterson had a chance to play with the best from all over Alaska, and undoubtedly some of their new teammates on these mixed squads were familiar.
Cordova Coach Jake Borst, who was selected to coach one of the teams in the 1A\2A contest, enjoyed the opportunity to guide many of the talented players he saw throughout the season.
Senior Lady Wolverine Yagnnesis Mejias – who spearheaded the girls’ drive to state – was invited to participate in the girls contest but opted to go to the music festival in Valdez, which took place at the same time.
The All Star games were run and gun showcases with not too much emphasis on defense.
Activities on Friday included an awards social and the first round of shooting contests. Saturday featured photo ops plus a game between the 1A/2A girls squads, followed a game between 1A/2A boys squads. Finals of shooting contests took place during half time of these games, as well as First Team All-State Recognition.
The 3A and 4A games followed completion of the 1A/2A events.
Saturday’s games and activities took place at Grace Christian School, where former Cordova Coach Jason Boerger, now the Grace coach, had a chance to visit with Borst – one of his players on the Cordova squad that played in the 3A title game back in 2006.
