Volunteers and Tanya Zastrow, a local artist, teamed up to raise funds for the Covered Spaces Project. On Thursday, Jan. 30, during the Iceworm Festival week, art lovers and people who support the initiative to build outdoor shelters in Cordova came together at the Reluctant Fisherman Restaurant.
Art sales from the heART Show Wall at the Reluctant Fisherman Restaurant are split 50/50 between the exhibiting artist and the Covered Spaces Project.
During Zastrow’s opening night showing, her stunning Eco-Prints was a big success! The newly and expertly painted wall by Rachel Hoover created a beautiful background for the art. Tanya’s work will be displayed through mid-April.
Through the generosity of the Reluctant Fisherman Restaurant, the heART Show Wall has been an opportunity for artists to showcase their work, create a nicer atmosphere in the restaurant and a way to help with a community project.
This winter Covered Spaces volunteers have been working on more than just installing the art show – they have also been with the City of Cordova on the Breakwater Park Area for future construction of a Covered Space at that location and another at Hartney Bay, through a joint effort with the U.S. Forest Service.
The results of the Covered Spaces Project will benefit community members in a variety of ways – including offering outdoor places for classes for learning, creating, picnics, celebrations, and more. Outdoor places offer the opportunity to be surrounded by natural sights and sounds, which is a known benefit to mental health. A network of multiple covered spaces connected with a walkable trail will offer better quality of life for all, including people of different mobility levels, while increasing improved opportunities for resident and visitor experiences.
The Cordova Chamber of Commerce has been working to improve activities and opportunities through the creation of experiences for visitors and residents alike. Covered Spaces are a perfect fit for future activities and events, and for anyone who appreciates the beauty of Cordova and wants to enjoy Cordova even more.
To everyone supporting and helping with this project, great job!
