Lady Wolverines open season with big win over Tok

Cordova’s Lady Wolverines opened their season with a big win over Tok at home on Jan. 10.

Unfortunately, the next day’s rematch between the two conference rivals had to be cancelled so Tok could catch the ferry back to Valdez before bad weather would have likely left them stranded in Cordova for several days.

Cordova came out showing a bit of first game jitters, trailing 12-11 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams were playing aggressive defense, but Cordova settled down to take a 29-18 halftime lead and never look back enroute to a 59-46 win over a very scrappy Tok squad.

The 59 points scored by Cordova were more than any points racked up in any game last year, and reflects not only the depth of this team but also the growth and promise of this squad.

Nine lady Wolverines scored – led by Isabelle Nothstine with 14 points. Katie Pallas was also in double digits with 11 points.

Tok was led by Skyla Frankyoung with 26 points.

Tok won the girls JV game 57-23. Layla Phillips topped Cordova, scoring with 11 points.

The Cordova Wolverines were firing on all cylinders as they raced past visiting conference rival Tok at home on Friday, Jan.10.

CHS jumped out to an early 19-14 lead and scored in double digits in the first three periods before sending in the reserves on the way to a 61-40 win.

Only eight three-pointers kept Tok close.

Cordova finished with three players in double digits – led by Chiko Jacob with 20 – in what turned into a one game tune-up for the upcoming Cordova Tipoff, as the visitor had to depart early due to a bad weather forecast for the ferry.

Individual Cordova varsity scoring: Itliong 19, Bailey 10, Pearson 3, Nothstine 9, and Jacob 20.

Cordova’s JV’s also won big, 47-26. Blake Bailey and Sean Ibanez topped the scoring with 14 points apiece.

Individual JV scoring: Bailey 14, Gasmen 5, Griffith 2, Ybanez 14, Danilo 14, and Bo 2.
