In May 2024, the Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) announced a realignment of 2A conferences for basketball.
Seward, formerly 3A, will drop to newly created to 2A Southern; Ninilchik and SuValley, formerly in the same conference as Cordova, will also move to 2A Southern.
The alignment was made to balance conference sizes within geographic areas. Putting Seward and Ninilchik, along with SuValley, in the same conference would appear to enhance Cordova’s chances to advance to state.
The new conferences are:
- Northwest: Chevak, Dillingham, Hooper Bay, Tikiqaq, Alaknuk, and Unalakleet;
- Interior: Cordova, Effie Kokrine, Glennallen, Nenana, and Tok;
- Southern: Lumen (if opt to 2A), Ninilchik, Seward, Susitna Valley, and Unalaska;
- Southeast: Craig, Haines, Metlakatla, Petersburg, and Wrangell.
Each conference will have two seeds in the State 2A Tournament.
In other basketball news, the much-anticipated season opener between Valdez and Cordova at home from Dec. 20-21 has been canceled due to ferry issues. Cordova’s home opener will now be against Tok from Jan. 10-11, 2025.
The Cordova boys will also travel to Juneau for the Capital City Invite from Dec. 26-28.
