Salvation Army volunteers are scheduled to distribute Blessing Boxes loaded with Thanksgiving fixings from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 21 at the Little Chapel Church in Cordova.

This is the first off-the-road project for the Salvation Army’s Blessing Boxes program in Alaska, said Jenni Ragland, service extension director for the Salvation Army in Anchorage.

The plan is to distribute 200 boxes at the Little Chapel Church and another 85 boxes through the Native Village of Eyak Elders program, Ragland said.

Volunteer Katherine Mead operates the entity’s food pantry in Cordova.

The Blessing Boxes will include turkeys, fresh potatoes, fresh apples, gravy mix, canned vegetables, cranberry sauce and a roasting pan for the turkey.

The Salvation Army has had a Blessing Box program for 14 years in Anchorage and the Matanuska Valley, but this is their first event in a community off the road system.

St. Michaels Church is donating gravy packets and canned goods and Mt. Eccles Elementary School is doing a food drive. Residents are also being asked to donate cans of cranberry sauce, gravy mix, marshmallows, fruit, and boxes of dry cereal.

The Salvation Army will also have their Red Kettle out for Moonlight Madness shopping events every Friday from Nov. 29 through Dec. 20 and is seeking people who want to showcase their singing, dancing, and other talents by the Red Kettle.

Anyone interested in adding their talents to the event is asked to contact the Salvation Army in Cordova.
