USCG investigates death of seaman

U.S. Coast Guard officials are investigating the death of 19-year-old Seaman Ethan Kelch of Virginia, who was found unresponsive and later died at Dutch Harbor on Jan. 27.

Kelch was a crewman assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Douglas Munro, which is based in Kodiak but was in Dutch Harbor awaiting repairs. He was reported missing during normal liberty hours on the evening of Jan. 26.

An air search was launched by crew attached to the Douglas Munro, and Unalaska Fire and Police Department personnel assisted in a ground search.

Searchers found Kelch unresponsive on the west side of Amaknak Island, and performed CPR, then transported him to the Iliuliuk Clinic, where he was pronounced dead the next morning.

Cause of death has not been determined.
