Rummage sale

A rummage sale sponsored by Cordova Church of the Nazarene will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, beginning Jan. 14, for at least two weeks at the old Troopers Building next to Northstar Lumber. Tipoff Tournament

The 37th Annual Tipoff Basketball Tournament kicks off Thursday, Jan. 17 at 3 p.m. with daily games through Saturday, Jan. 19 in the CHS gymnasium. Come watch Metlakatla, Point Hope, Palmer and Cordova battle it out on the court. Find the full details here.

Homecoming Coronation

Cordova Jr./Sr. High School’s Homecoming Coronation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 in the CHS gymnasium. Immediately following is the final Tipoff Tournament boys game, Cordova VS Metlakatla at 7 p.m.

Saturday Market

This month’s Cordova Saturday Market will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Masonic Lodge.

Stewardship Film Festival

The Cordova Jr./Sr. High School students are hosting a 2019 Stewardship Film Festival from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21 at Mt. Eccles Elementary. Warm soups, bread and desserts will be available during the event with a recommended donation of $5/bowl and $3/desserts. Proceeds go towards their upcoming trip to Anchorage for the 2019 Alaska Forum on the Environment.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day closures at NVE

Native Village of Eyak, Ilanka Cultural Center, The Cordova Times and Ilanka Community Health Center* will be closed Monday, Jan 21 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Regular business hours will resume the following business day. *For emergencies, call 911 or go to the CCMC Emergency Room located at 602 Chase Ave. If you have an urgent issue and need to talk to a nurse, please call 907-424-3622 and follow the prompts. All CCMC Departments and offices will remain open.

Ilanka Cultural Center’s Annual Membership Dinner

Ilanka Cultural Center’s Annual Membership Dinner will be 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 22 at the Cordova Center. Following dinner, there will be a Chugach and Eyak Legends Skit performed by the Cordova Ikumat Dance group. Tickets are $25 and include 2019 Ilanka Cultural Center Membership. Calling all hunters and anglers

The Backcountry Hunters and Anglers-Alaska Chapter is hosting a Cordova “Pint Night” membership drive from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23 at the Powder House. The group hopes to raise awareness of public land access issues, find new members and meet like-minded people who enjoy recreating on public lands. Families are welcome.

Plastics Recycling

The first Plastic Recycling event of 2019 is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jan. 25 in the AC Value Center parking lot. Childbirth education

A childbirth education course from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Ilanka Community Health Center will cover labor and birth, relaxation, birth interventions, breastfeeding, postpartum care and care of the newborn. Iceworm Festival

The 2019 Cordova Iceworm Festival begins Saturday, Jan. 26 and goes until Saturday, Feb. 2. This year’s festival theme is “Out of this World”.

Cordova Comprehensive Plan Update

Come to the Cordova Center from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30 for the Community Survey and Comment Map Results and learn what your Cordova family, friends, neighbors and co-workers had to say about their future Cordova.

Film night: ‘On the Tip of the Tongue’

Hosted by the Eyak Language Revitalization group, French filmmaker Vincent Bonnay’s feature-length documentary, “On The Tip of The Tongue” (Sur Le Bout De La Langue), will be shown from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31 at the Cordova Center. His film was one of 160 selected for the 2018 Anchorage International Film Festival, which received more than 1,000 entries. Filmed in Cordova, the documentary follows Eyak people on their journey to regain their language, culture, land and identity stolen from them many years ago.

Free business classes

The Ilanka Cultural Center is hosting free business classes to help new businesses get up and running. Their last class will be offered Thursday, Jan. 31. Seating is limited, so sign up early. Holiday Art Show

The Cordova Museum’s annual Holiday Art Show is open at the Copper River Gallery in the Cordova Museum at the Cordova Center. The museum is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.

A play group for children from infants to 4 years old is open from 10 a.m. to noon Mondays at the Masonic Lodge. The group focuses on exploring developmental issues and building on each child’s strengths through large-motor and small-motor skills play, pretend play and sensory play. Healthcare series online seminars

The 2019 Winter Geriatric Healthcare Series, Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias, online via the University of Washington, began Jan. 8 and will continue through March 12 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. every Tuesday. Each session costs $10 per person or $60 for the entire series. Retirees, students and volunteers who do not need credits or certificates do not need to register and can attend for free. Gospel sing-along

Join members of the St. George Episcopal Church on Tuesdays from 4-5 p.m. at the Cordova Community Medical Center for their Tuesday gospel sing-along, started in honor of Frances Mallory, and led by Christina Vican and Belle Mickelson. Little Ones at Storytime

Little Ones at Storytime, with youth services librarian Anna Hernandez, is 10:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesdays in the Cordova Public Library. Join Anna for stories, songs, and finger plays, geared toward preschool ages. There will be no Storytime Dec. 23-30.

Teen Art

Teen Art with Paula Payne will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesdays in the Education Room at the Cordova Center. There will be no Teen Art Dec. 23-30.

Open studio life drawing

An open studio life drawing class Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m., begins Jan. 30 at the Cordova Center education room. A model fee donation of $5-10 is suggested and drop-ins are welcome. For more information call Paula Payne at 907-424-6667.


FRIDAYS

Morning Music

Morning music is back from 8:05 a.m. to 8:40 a.m. Thursdays and Fridays at the Mt. Eccles Elementary School music room for kindergarten through sixth grade students. Learn to sing and play fiddles, guitar, ukulele, bass, banjo and mandolin. Older students and parents are needed as helpers. Pre-schoolers are welcome to come with their care givers. After School Art

After School Art with Debbie Carlson will be held 3-4 p.m. Fridays in the Education Room at the Cordova Center. This program is geared towards grades 1-4. There will be no After School Art Dec. 23-30.

Patch the Pirate Kids Club

Patch the Pirate Kids Club will be held 3-5 p.m. Fridays at the MorningStar Independent Baptist Church, 412 First St., for children grades first through sixth.
