Eccles Elementary School showed up for safety patrol training. They participated in three days of training after school with PTA parent Emily Low and community engagement advocate Kathy Zamudio. They were taught safety procedures, patrol member duties, and their responsibilities. Mt. Eccles principal Frank Wicks is concerned for the safety of all students. "Safety is of highest concern here at Mt. Eccles especially with the construction of a new gym and renovation of Mt. Eccles building during school hours. I appreciate North Pacific Erectors and Chugach Alaska Services Inc. for keeping safety as a No. 1 priority as well. Safety concern from these construction companies began at day one with additional concerns addressed immediately as the project progresses," Wicks said. "The sixth-grade safety patrol, which began the week of Jan. 25, is just one more way to keep everyone safe. Many thanks to Emily Low and Kathy Zamudio for establishing the safety program through Safe Routes to School." Wicks said that two students are on patrol every day after school until the first bus leaves and traffic has calmed down. There is also an adult on duty serving as crossing guard and overseeing the area. "Darlene Galambush has been very helpful with safety patrol and safety in the school. Next year, we plan to train new sixth-graders to continue with the program and adjust as changes occur with school construction," he said. The students are also producing bike/walk safety presentations to share with other students and the community. The rain coats and other gear were provided by funds from Safe Routes to School grant. Alaska 3M donated reflective tape. Cordova Safe Routes to School is a subcommittee of Cordova Parent-Teacher Association. Cordova Times Staff can be reached at editor@alaskanewspapers.com |
